HOKA NAZ ELITE AT THE TCS NYC MARATHON:
This was the team’s first crack at the famous New York course. Matt Llano, coming off a sixth-place finish at the Olympic Trials Marathon earlier in the year, wanted to give it a go against the best in the world. He certainly did that, leading for much of the first half of the race, but it wasn’t meant to be in the end. He finished 17th, but the team learned a lot about the course and the following years would yield very different results.
Two of those teammates who were able to learn about the magic of NYC Marathon weekend were Stephanie Bruce and Scott Fauble who both ran the Abbott Dash to the Finish 5k the day before the Marathon. Faubs finished second in the men’s race with Steph grabbing third in the women’s race.
The headline of this year’s NYC Marathon was, and always will be, Shalane Flanagan’s historic victory in the women’s race. One of four Americans in the top 10 that year, Flanagan was the first U.S. female champion since Miki Gorman in 1977. Two of those top-10s belonged to HOKA NAZ Elite’s Kellyn Taylor (eighth) and Stephanie Bruce (10th). It would turn out to be the first of many successful runs for both Kellyn and Steph.
HOKA NAZ Elite had three athletes on the famous Staten Island start line this year: Steph Bruce, Scott Fauble and Scott Smith. Steph backed up her 10th-place finish in 2017 with an 11th-place showing this time around. But the star of the day was Scott Fauble who crushed the last 10k of the difficult course to cross the line in seventh–just a few ticks back of Jared Ward who was the top American. Faubs and Coach Ben Rosario chronicled the entire build-up to NYC in their book, Inside A Marathon.
The Women of NAZ were on center stage at the 2019 NYC Marathon. It was the last big marathon before the upcoming Olympic Trials scheduled for the final day of February, 2020. Kellyn Taylor was back in New York after a one-year hiatus and she was joined by the one and only Aliphine Tuliamuk. Aliphine had signed with NAZ in 2018 and promptly won a couple of national titles in addition to finishing third at the 2019 Rotterdam Marathon. Kellyn improved one spot from 2017 to finish in seventh-place with Aliphine a little over a minute back in 12th. Just under four months later Aliphine would go on to win the Olympic Trials with Kellyn in eighth and their teammate Steph Bruce in sixth.
The Covid-19 Pandemic forced the cancellation of the in-person 2020 NYC Marathon but the New York Road Runners did host a virtual race for anyone and everyone across the globe. HOKA NAZ Elite’s Steph Bruce was the fastest of them all…running a 2:35:28 (as a training run) down in Camp Verde, Ariz. with husband Ben Bruce as her pacer.
Kellyn and Steph were back at it in 2021, veterans of the course at this point…and it showed. Steph was 10th–equaling her finish from 2017. But the MVP of the weekend for the team was Kellyn who ran in the lead pack for much of the way, eventually getting pipped at the line to finish sixth in 2:26:10–one of the fastest times every run in New York City by an American woman.
The NYC course is not necessarily the friendliest place to run your first marathon but HOKA NAZ Elite’s Matt Baxter did not let that bother him in 2022. Matt made his 26.2 mile debut through the five boroughs and came away with a very respectable 12th-place finish. Steph ran New York again and this time, in a very deep field, ended up 13th. But the team’s performance of the day belonged to Aliphine Tuliamuk. In her first marathon since a DNF at the Olympic Games due to injury, Aliphine crushed it–finishing seventh in 2:26:18.
HOKA NAZ Elite newcomer Ahmed Muhumed kicked off 2023 NYC Marathon weekend with a runner-up finish at the USATF 5k Championships held in Central Park the day before the Marathon as a part of the Abbott Dash to the Finish 5k. The good vibes carried over to Sunday when Kellyn Taylor, in her fourth appearance, finished eighth at the NYC Marathon. The run gave her four top-10s (eighth in 2017, seventh in 2019, sixth in 2021, eighth in 2023) and solidified that she was back after giving birth less than a year earlier to her daughter Keagan. In the men’s race, Futsum Zienasellassie finished 10th–giving the team the top American in both races for the first time in a World Marathon Major.
